Live Earth UK - the lights stay on!

There had been plans to get everyone to turn of their lights and other power sources as part of the July 7 Live Earth Concert in the UK. The concert is designed to raise awareness of global warming and the organisers thought that this would be a way to send a symbolic message to the powers that be about peoples concerns about Global Warming. The organisers are having to rethink their plans though because the National Grid have insisted that when everyone turns the power back on there will be a risk of a power surge that would fry the national grid and cause problems in hospitals and other sensitive areas. back to the drawing board for the organisers on this one.

Roger Daltry slams live earth concerts

Roger Daltrey is not very impressed with the idea of the Live earth Concerts this summer.

The Live Earth event at Wembley will feature acts who support the idea of awareness of global warming. The WHO won't be playing but the line up includes Madonna and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Daltrey speaking to the UK's The Sun said,
"Bollocks to that! The last thing the planet needs is a rock concert. I can't believe it. Let's burn even more fuel. We have problems with global warming, but the questions and the answers are so huge I don't know what a rock concert's ever going to do to help. Everybody on this planet at the moment, unless they are living in the deepest rainforest in Brazil, knows about climate change... My answer is to burn all the f***ing oil as quick as possible and then the politicians will have to find a solution."

Fortunately for the rest of us Roger Daltry is not respeonsible for the worldwide response to the mpending disaster of Global Warming.

He also compared the 2006 Live 8 concerts to relieve African nations of their international debt, and the 1985 Live Aid concerts for famine relief with the Live Aid event.
The Who played both of these events but according to Daltry,

"What did we really achieve at Live 8? We got loads of platitudes and no action. Who were we kidding there? At least with Live Aid, Bob Geldof was willing to work the trenches and they did save a lot of lives. We could see what we achieved at the end of it."

What Roger Daltry fails to understand is that it is not just awareness of Gobal warming that the events are seeking to raise but also awareness that there is a need to take action and the consequences if we don't. Now the Live Earth events may not be the perfect way to do that but we don't hear Roger Daltry coming up with any other suggestions do we? It seems all Daltry is interested in at the moment is his current tour and keeping his bank balance up.

Check out the links on the left for info on line ups for the events. The Who wont be playing.

Watching the sceptics

Of course not everyone is convinced that Live Earth is a good thing and one of the things we will do here is monitor some of the sceptics and wet blankets who want to pour scorne on the whole thing.

Take Dan Calabrese at the North Star writers group. He admits to being a bit of scientific ingnoramus but nevertheless has an ego so wide that he is prepared to dismiss the evidence of man made global warming as simply being the product of slick propoganda and he clearly sees Live Earth as merely a part of this propoganda machine. Never mind the evidence that rolls in week after week Dan. Hey thats only fact! Much better to create some sort of conspiracy theory about the whole thing eh?

Jonathan Ross hosts Live Earth Wembley

Jonathan Ross who hosted the 2005 Live8 event is to host the UK leg of the Live Earth concerts.

The huge climate change awareness show is being held at venues across the world and will be shown live on July 7th directly from the new Wembley Stadium in London. The event will include sets from Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Spinal tap and a host of other goodies.

Foo Fighters Dave Grohl on Live Earth

The Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl speaking exclusively to Xfm has talked about his excitement about playing the UK leg of the Live Earth Global Climate Change Awareness concert at Wembley Stadium on July 7.

“I’m really excited about it. I’ve never been to Wembley Stadium, I’ve been to the arena a couple of times, but never the big one, and I hear that this is the new one, so I’m kinda looking forward to it, and I’m usually the first person at the party and the last one to leave, so I reckon it’ll be fun.”
“I got a call from our management, and they said that there was a Live Earth event, and it was happening in a few [seven] cities all over the world and we were invited to play, so before we knew of any of the cities or any of the bands playing, we said ‘Of course! We’d love to do it!'
"It’s something that we’re all very interested in, and then when we found out where we were playing, we were even more excited. So yeah, it’s a twofer. Twice as exciting.”

The Live Earth Wembley Concert line up also includes the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bloc Party, Beastie Boys, Madonna and James Blunt as well as re-forming film legends Spinal Tap ( as reported in our last post).

“There’s some people on the bill that probably wouldn’t be seen in the same room as us, but hey man, I’ll party with anybody.”

Live Earth reunites Spinal Tap

Thats it - we are definately most definately watching Live Earth! Spinal Tap , those over the top rockers who starred in Rob Reiner's 1984 classic rock 'n' roll mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap" are reforming for Live Earth.

The news is that the original members of This Is Spinal Tap, Guitarist Nigel Tufnel (played by Christopher Guest), singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) and bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), will reunite for Live Earth at Wembley Stadium in London on July 7.

This is Spinal Tap must rate as one of the funniest film commentaries on "rock gods" ever made and if you havnt already seen it you really must. The reunion of Spinal Tap should be one of the highlights of the Wembley Live Earth event.

Will Live Earth make a difference?

The live Earth concert at Wembley Stadium in London looks set to be a resounding success with the announcement of the line up.

Live Earth London is part of the 24-hour, 7-continent Live Earth concerts which will take place 7/7/07 . There has already been some carping at the Live Earth event by themedia who have made reference to the fact that many of the stars who will be playing atthe event are unlikely to get there using environmentally friendly means of transport. Indeed many of them will probably use expensive limousines and airflights. Kevin Wall, the Live Earth founder and executive producer, was up beat though and spoke about the line up;

"This monster lineup will ensure Live Earth meets our goal of bringing together people from around the world to combat the climate crisis. Live Earth will not only span 7 continents, but the musicians who have answered our call span multiple genres and generations."

Live Earth co-chair vice president Al Gore said.

"By attracting an audience of billions, we hope Live Earth will launch a global campaign giving a critical mass of people around the world the tools they need to help solve the climate crisis. But ultimately, corporations and governments must become global leaders taking decisive action to stop global warming."

It would be good to think that this concert could raise consciousness about global warming issues in the same way that other global events have raised the profile of for example world hunger. there will be those who suggest these events will not do much for the environment. It is true that the direct impact of these events may be limited but if they play a part in raising generations who will make a stand against man made pollution and greenhouse gas emissions then they will have served their purpose.
